Architectural marvels

You can’t miss the numerous examples of modernist architecture, the most famous being the works of Antoni Gaudi. One of the most impressive places to see his style is at the extraordinary La Sagrada Familia Cathedral. Gaudi took over the design in 1883 and worked on it until his death in 1926, but work to complete the structure continues to this day.

Explore Las Ramblas

By day or night Las Ramblas is a great place to enjoy some al fresco dining, a glass of sangria, explore the shops and boutiques or watch the buskers and street entertainers. The 1.2 kilometre boulevard is primarily pedestrianised, with only two one-way narrow roads running on either side it runs from Port Vell at the southernmost end to Placa Catalunya at the northernmost end.

Laze on the beach

There are four main beach areas offering 4.2km of golden sandy beaches to laze on just 10 minutes drive from the city centre. Barceloneta Beach is a tourist hot spot so if you are after a bit of peace and quite then head to one of the other three beaches.

Take the cable car up Montserrat

The Montserrat cable car is arguably the fastest and safest way of climbing the mountain. Enjoy the five-minute journey up the slopes to take in the superb views including the famous 12th century sculpture of the Virgin Mary. The line runs from the monastery down to the station of Montserrat-Aeri.

If you plan to spend a few days sightseeing, it’s worth purchasing the Barcelona Card. Valid for two to five days, it comes with a free guide book and entitles you to discounts at various museums, attractions and restaurants across the city, as well as unlimited free transport.
