Dance a Flamenco
No visit to Spain would be complete without experiencing the thrill of flamenco, a typically Spanish form of music and dance. Originating in Andalucía, its history can be traced over several centuries from Gypsy, Moorish, Andalucian, and other roots. Flamenco is now widely performed across the country and incorporates elements of pop, rock and jazz. The colourful and flamboyantly dressed dancers stamp and click their heels to high tempo guitar sounds, hand-clapping and soulful songs, interspersed by loud ‘Ole’s’ from the audience. Performances can commonly be seen at fiestas or local clubs and particularly during the summer months, at bars and restaurants.
Sip a sangria
Typical of Spain and neighbouring Portugal is the region’s favourite alcoholic tipple, Sangria, widely available in bars and restaurants. A fruity punch made with red wine, chopped fruit and lemonade or sparkling water, it is deceptively drinkable and often served as a refreshing drink over ice. Some recipes also add a sweetener like sugar or honey, and a stronger liquor like brandy or triple sec to give it an added kick! Sangria is often served in a one litre pitcher so why not find that scenic Spanish bar, order some tapas and take the time to watch the colourful world go by.
Shopping Spanish-style
Spain is a great destination for shopping, from the street markets and antique shops to department stores and boutiques you can find something for everyone. Barcelona has a five kilometre largely pedestrianised area known as the Shopping Line which stretches from the top of Las Ramblas, through Place de Catalunya and up to Avenue Diagonal. The area includes many thousands of shops and boutiques including exclusive fashion emporiums, art galleries, craft shops, flower stalls and much much more. Open-air markets also play a large part in Spanish life. These are fantastic for looking for fresh food.
