Previously occupied by Arabs, Greeks, Romans, Spanish and French, it’s no surprise that Sicilian cuisine is rich and varied. Make sure you try the rich desserts, like ice-cream dish cassata, and cannoli, fried pastries stuffed with sweet ricotta and rolled in chocolate.

Sweet aromas

For a Sicilian tipple, try a drop of Marsala, a fortified wine similar to port, produced in the Marsala region. It has an intense amber colour and a complex aroma and is traditionally served as an aperitif. Sicily also boasts a large number of lemon trees and so drinks featuring lemons, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, are also popular. Alcoholic lemon drinks include limoncello, which again is often homemade.
