Travellers’ Secrets

The Acropolis

The Parthenon is the most famous monument on Athens’ inspirational rock of the Acropolis, but the area is actually home to a vast number of other highly regarded archaeological sites. Explore the Erechtheion, located on the north side of the Acropolis, an elegant building constructed between 421 and 406 BC, the Temple of Athena Nike to the south-east edge, the Old Temple of Athena, and many other impressive structures like the Beule Gate and the Acropolis fortification wall.

Eating late

The Greeks tend to eat late so expect the best restaurants and bars to be serving lunch roughly between 2 and 3.30pm, and dinner between 9 and 11pm, although in the more tourist-oriented areas you can, of course, find food throughout the day. Tavernas or grill-houses called psistaries offer a tempting range of traditional appetisers like tzatziki or Greek salads, or main dishes such as souvlaki, chops or Keftédhes (breadcrumbed meatballs). The best souvlaki tend to be lamb, and other good choices are stewed or baked goat dishes, or oven baked casserole dishes such as moussaka.

Ancient history

Throughout Greece you will find numerous fascinating archaeological monuments and structures. One of the most interesting, and a must-visit, is at Knossos on the island of Crete. Legend tells that Knossos was the court of King Minos, father of the half-man, half-beast Minotaur, and it was here, in a labyrinth, that the Minotaur was kept caged as human sacrifices were brought from Athens – until Theseus arrived to try and slay him! In the early 20th century, Sir Arthur Evans excavated the site, the largest of Crete’s Minoan palaces, and archaeologists and historians attempted to create fact from mythological fiction. Another must-visit is the birthplace of European civilisation, the Acropolis. Enjoy a show at the ampitheatre for something different.
