Why not try apple wine

It’s not cider exactly, but Frankfurt’s favourite tipple is Apfelwein (Apple wine), best tasted at one of the specialist taverns across town. The best known are in Sachsenhausen: try Adolf Wagner (open daily from 11am) or Klaane Sachsehäuser (open from 4pm, closed Sunday). Apfelwein can be drunk ‘neat’ or as a blend with a variety of different mixers, including mineral water (the resulting drink is known as Sauergespritzer), lemonade (Sussgespritzer), coca cola (known as a Korea) and even beer (Bembelschalabber) – although the purists frown upon mixing it and some taverns will refuse to serve it in anything other than its original form!

Main Tower

For great city views, head up to the viewing platform at Main Tower. At 200 metres tall, it’s the highest vantage point in Frankfurt and you can see for miles in every direction. The platform is open daily throughout the year, except in the case of bad weather or stormy winds. One floor below you’ll find a restaurant and cocktail bar, which is listed in the Top 10 most exclusive restaurants in the city, and is the perfect place to unwind and watch the sun set over the sights.

Shopping in Zeil

Nicknamed the ‘Fifth Avenue of Germany’, head to the Zeil for Frankfurt’s best selection of shops in Germany’s busiest and most popular shopping strip. Home to a selection of department stores and outlets, it is also renowned for its architect-designed 10-storey shopping centre, the Zeilgalerie, with a spiral shaped interior.

Visit Palmengarten

Established in 1868; 20 hectares of gardens bloom with flowers and other unusual plants throughout the year.
