Welcome to Paris

Bienvenue en Paris

The essence of France, Paris is a dazzling city of beauty, romance and iconic images. Divided into 20 districts, or arrondissements, each with their own unique characteristics, you can easily spend weeks exploring this city and will still have only scratched the surface. The 1st district is the geographical centre of the city and contains the Louvre and Tuileries Gardens. The other districts span out cyclically around it and are home to all of Paris’s most treasured sights: the Eiffel Tower (7th), the Champs-Elysées (8th), the Bastille (11th), the Arc de Triomphe (17th) and artistic Montmartre and the captivating Sacré Coeur (18th).

Travellers’ Secrets

Gourmet delights

In the Place de la Madeleine you’ll find Paris’ gourmet food stores, Fauchon and Hediard. Both house small ‘salons de thé’, so you can sample some of their delights.

Secret shopping

Explore the winding secret passages of the district, with 19th-century arcades crammed full of fabulous shops and eateries, flamboyantly decorated with murals and faux marble columns.

Sacré Coeur

Don’t miss a visit to Montmartre’s famous white-domed church, Sacré Coeur. Built in the 1870s and perched on top of Paris’ highest hill, it affords spectacular views over the city, particularly sensational at sunset. A great spot for a picnic overlooking the city.

Marais, République & Bastille Districts

A fashionable aristocratic district in the 17th century, today Marais combines the seductive charms of old Paris with trendy, artistic living.

Travellers’ Secrets

Bastille celebrations

Each year on 14 July France celebrates Bastille Day, marking the date in 1789 when the Parisian people stormed the Bastille prison, signalling the start of the French Revolution. At the Place de la Bastille you can still see the landmark column topped with the gilded ‘Spirit of Liberty’, although the remains of the prison itself have been moved to square Henri-Galli.

Picasso’s collection

If you’re in town on the first Sunday of the month you can gain free admission to the Picasso Museum, the world’s largest collection of Picassos’ with representations spanning his entire career. There are 203 paintings, 191 sculptures, 85 ceramics and more than 3000 drawings, engravings and manuscripts in the museum. The works show his diverse ability and talent.

Left Bank, Latin Quarter & St-Germain-des-Prés districts

The 5th, 6th and 7th districts encompass some of the most attractive parts of Paris, with lively cafes, boutiques and the iconic Eiffel Tower.

Travellers’ Secrets

People watching

The place de la Sorbonne affords great views of the forbidding looking buildings of the Sorbonne, Paris’s historic University. Scattered with cafes, it’s a great place to sit and watch the world go by and, in the centre of the square, is a preserved vestige from the structures built during the time of Roman occupation.

Paris shopping

The Latin and Saint Germain-des-Prés districts are great places for shopping and strolling with a great mix of trendy fashion stores, upmarket boutiques and quaint antique markets. The Latin Quarter is also a great place to grab a bite to eat with an abundance of street vendors and restaurants.
