When they invented the word ‘chic’ they must have had France in mind; cosmopolitan cities, glittering Mediterranean resorts and bags of style and culture,

this is a country that knows how to live well. Long, lazy lunches with fabulous, rich food and fine wines can be enjoyed in charming rustic, eclectic Bohemian or uber-elegant surroundings, with that added splash of ‘je ne sais quoi’.

Travellers’ Secrets

Wine tasting in the best region

Many consider France to be the greatest wine-producing country in the world, so be sure to take advantage by sampling the best of the key regions: Bordeaux is famed for its big reds with soft, aromatic flavours like Medoc; the Loire Valley produces light and fruity white, and refreshing, flavoursome rose wines like Sancerre and Touraine; Champagne is the home of authentic champagne; and the Alsace region produces dry intense flavours like Muscat and Gewürztraminer.

Cycling fanatics

The French are cycling fanatics, so it’s only natural that they host the world’s most famous bike race, the Tour de France, which weaves its way through the countryside for three weeks in July. The 23-stage route changes each year but covers around 3500km, travelling through most of France, so no matter where you are you should be able to catch a glimpse of the 200+ competitors. The race culminates with a thrilling sprint finish along the Champs-Elysées in Paris.

Nightlife

If you really want to hit the town, why not try this bar, Pershing Hall (49 Rue Pierre Charron). An excellent bar located on a high level building in the heart of the Champs-Elysées area. Known for its vertical garden, a 90-degree plantation of palms, liamas and leaves that stretches upward of 30 metres. This is a lounge bar with excellent cocktails where the locals clock for happy hour.

Take a stroll

Stroll along the beautiful Champs-Elysées which stretches from Place de la Concarde to the Arc de Triomphe, truly the heart of Paris. Or why not explore the left bank and the lively Latin Quarter and Saint Germain-des-Prés, see the Palais du Luxembourg and its beautiful gardens as well as lots of boutiques and cafes.
