 Travel Tips

Visas and Documents
Entry to China requires a passport valid for at least six months from the time of entry. Nationals of most countries are required to obtain visas for periods varying from 30 days to 180 days including Australia and New Zealand to enter the country for holiday purpose.

Getting Around
Taxis – metered taxis can be arranged through hotels. Ensure that the driver has activated the meter and that you are clear on your final destination. Carry hotel cards with you to show your taxi driver when returning to the hotel as English is limited. Subway – the subway in Beijing/Shanghai is very convenient. Cost is around 3 Yuan depending on distance you wish to travel.

Other Information
Transport and touring schedule changes throughout China are common and are a reality of travelling through this part of the world. In the case of any changes, you will be kept fully informed and briefed of any amendments to the order of sightseeing.
Valuables (passport, credit cards, excess cash, jewellery, etc) should be left in the safe in your hotel room or kept in secure keeping at reception. Only take essentials out with you on to the streets. There is some risk of pick pocketing in major cities.

 Currency

The basic unit is RenMinBi (RMB), also called Chinese Yuan (CNY) in written form. Notes issued by People’s Bank of China have denominations of RMB1, RMB5, RMB10, RMB50 and RMB100.

One RenMinBi or One Yuan can be divided into 10 Jiao and 100 Fen. Travellers Cheques & Cash can be changed at most hotels and the rates are standardised daily by government.

Tipping
Tipping is expected though not compulsory. If you are happy with the services provided by your guides, drivers and your tour leader, a tip is appropriate. Whilst tipping may or may not be customary to you, it is an entrenched feature of the tourism industry cross China. As a general guide, please allow for 10 USD per day per traveller
(for guide and driver).

China - a country in motion

China is a must destination to visit for Asia, as it is a country in rapid motion. To be among the Chinese people is to feel the energy of change and it should be remembered, however that China is a 5000 year old civilisation that differs greatly to the ways of the western world in areas such as customs, language, food and culture.

Be prepared to experience the spectacular architecture and towering skylines in Shanghai and Beijing (venue of the 2008 Summer Olympics), a wealth of luxury accommodation and exquisite cuisine.
