Visa & passport

Local customs
You should always remove your shoes when entering a Thai home or place of worship. Bargaining is the norm here (apart from in department stores) and with a bit of skill and a smile, you can hope for 10–40% off the asking price.
Tipping
Tipping is not usual practice in Thailand although it is becoming more common. Most hotels and restaurants add a 10% service charge to the bill.

The official language is Thai, however English is widely understood.

Local cuisine
Thai food is spicy, fresh and bursting with flavour so don’t miss the chance to sample the best dishes the country has to offer. Make sure you try some tom yam goong, a spicy prawn soup with a blend of herbs and spices reputed to have medicinal benefits; or phad thai a noodle-based dish with bean sprouts, spring onions, peanuts and dried prawns. And if you wake up one morning feeling the effects of the night before, try a bowl of khao tom, a starch rice dish hailed as the perfect hangover cure!
Traditional Thai massage
Relax on a beach anywhere in Thailand and it won’t be long before a masseuse approaches you and offers you a traditional massage. Many resorts also have their own spas where you can treat yourself to the ultimate in relaxation. An ancient art, Thai massage involves stretching and deep massage to unblock the vital energy channels of the body. The practitioner uses hands, feet, elbows and knees to apply pressure and pull the limbs into yogic positions. Sessions usually last between one and two hours.
Festival of light
If you are in the country in November, try to catch one of the spectacular Loy Krathong festival celebrations. Also known as
the festival of light, loy means ‘to float’ and krathong is a raft made from a section of banana tree. On the night of the full moon, small boats or baskets are floated on Thai rivers and waterways to bring good fortune for the coming year. Filled with flowers, incense and candles, the floating procession is a fabulous sight and often coincides with massive fireworks displays and competitions.
The best places to enjoy Loy Krathong are in Bangkok or the cities of the Northern Region.
