Travellers’ Secrets

Hindu Festival

In late January each year, Kuala Lumpur and other towns and

villages around Malaysia celebrate the Hindu festival of Thaipusam. Devotees honour Lord Subramaniam with chanting, dancing and amazing acts of masochism – piercing their skin with hooks, pushing metal skewers through their cheeks and walking over hot coals. These acts are all done under a trance and the devotees claim to feel no pain. It is an amazing spectacle to witness with the biggest events taking place at the Batu Caves in Kuala Lumpur and the Waterfall Temple in Penang.

Arts & crafts

The Malaysian people are very proud of their traditional arts and crafts and you can pick up some fabulous souvenirs to suit all budgets. Earthenware products like the labu sayong (a gourd-shaped grey jar, traditionally used to store water) or the sompoton (a musical instrument made from a gourd and resembling a harmonica) are widely available, along with hand-woven crafts and textiles including batik and songket. You can also find intricate jewellery or art pieces including the Kerongsang (a three-piece brooch) and the Pending (a large, ornate belt buckle).

National parks

Malaysia is famed for its spectacular national parks and rainforests and one of the most impressive and largest covering 434,000 hectares is Taman Negara, the oldest official protected area in the country. Originally called the King George V National Park it has ‘existed’ as national parkland since 1938, and was renamed following independence in 1957. The park, now a famous eco tourism destination, is a fantastic place for jungle trekking or river rafting, and it is well worth spending some time on the canopy walk to appreciate the awesome magnificence of the jungle below. At more than 130 million years old, Taman Negara is also thought to be the oldest rainforest in the world.
