Tiger Balm Gardens

Don’t miss a visit to the AW Boon Thaw or Tiger Balm Gardens. Built in 1935 by the millionaire businessman behind tiger balm ointment, it is one of three such gardens in Asia and the statues retain much of their splendour – particularly those depicting scenes from Chinese mythology – a highlight of the gardens is an impressive seven-story white pagoda.

Star Ferry

For the best introduction to Hong Kong take a ride on the famed Star Ferry which has been running between the Island and Kowloon since 1898. Fares range from $1.70 to $6 depending on the route and operate between 6.30am and 11.30pm. A recent addition to the fleet, you can also join a tour on board the Shining Star, a double-decker re-creation of the ferries that cruised the harbour in the 1920s. Getting out on the water not only affords you fantastic views of the harbour, but also gets you up close with the wonderful mayhem of water traffic – a distinctive part of Hong Kong life!

Aberdeen

Aberdeen, tucked away on the southern end of the island, is home to the yachts of the rich and famous and is a great place to enjoy dinner on one of the exotic floating restaurants. If you’re visiting in June, don’t miss the colourful Dragon Boat Festival, one of the biggest such events in Hong Kong. Just beyond Aberdeen is the fabulous Ocean Park – a giant theme park and aquarium, it’s the perfect place to take the kids.

Hong Kong is renowned for its shopping – from designer boutiques to street markets, you can find it all in this shoppers’ paradise. Try the famous Stanley Market on Hong Kong Island’s south side.
