Quality Tourism Scheme
Hong Kong is well known for its fabulous shopping and with such a glut of stores, outlets and markets it’s hard to know where to start. The Hong Kong Tourism Board has started a scheme called QTS (Quality Tourism Scheme), which certifies shops and restaurants which pass a series of stringent annual checks, including price, quality and customer service. Peak tram
A must-do in Hong Kong is a trip on the Peak tram. Built in 1888 the tram tackles the hair-raisingly steep path up to the 552 metre-high Peak Tower, a great observation point for breathtaking views across the city. There are also shops, cafes and a mini Madame Tussauds with wax-work figures of Hong Kong’s famous, like Jackie Chan and Michelle Yeoh. Make the trip on a clear day, and sit on the right side of the tram for the best views. Once at the top you can also walk the three kilometre circuit of the Peak for sensational panoramas. Or you can just sit and enjoy the views of bustling Hong Kong below.
Macau casinos
A huge collection of glitzy casinos operate in Macau around the clock and they boast the biggest selection of games in the world. Solidifying its reputation as the East’s Las Vegas, in recent years two Vegas-based gambling companies were issued a licence to operate casinos, adding to the 30 plus already in existence. Games available include roulette, black jack, fan-tan and thousands of slot machines, known to the locals as ‘hungry tigers’. Signs at the entrance to each casino warn visitors to stick to their limits and not over stretch themselves! Have a flutter at the Paraoh’s Casino with its Egyptian theme or one of the many Las Vegas-style casinos.
